Harrogate Spring Flower Show 2014

Premiere Award - Harrogate Spring Flower Show 2014
“The Essence of York Gate”

For this year’s Spring Flower Show, David Massey Garden Construction built a show garden for the charity Perennial. Perennial is the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping people who work in horticulture.
To mark their 175 year anniversary, this show garden was inspired by the charity’s own garden York Gate, based in Adel near Leeds.

“The Essence of York Gate” show cases the many aspects that make York Gate such a remarkable and inspiring garden, with its ingenious use of space and meticulous attention to detail.
The show garden design by Shanet Alexander, is laid out in a Fibonacci spiral, a mathematical principle often seen in nature.

This shape divides the space into areas that pick out some of the key features that make up the garden in Adel, such as the unique yew “sails” represented by a sedum clad structure. The curved box hedging as featured in “Sybil’s garden” and the characteristic stone paths and pillars. While York Gate’s canal, ponds and streams are expressed by a rust coloured Cor-ten steel tank, fed by a mythical looking lions head.

“The Essence of York Gate” achieved the following awards:

  • Premiere Gold
  • Best in Show
  • Best Planting in Show
